Habit Forming vs. New Year’s Resolutions

Right now we are close to the end of January and I think most people are still aiming at those New Year’s Resolutions.
So here’s the thing. I personally believe in habit forming over New Year’s Resolutions.

What does that mean?

Simply put, it means that you implement new habits in order to achieve your goals. Of course New Year’s Resolutions are goals too, but many times we forget that new habits are NOT formed in 21 days, sometimes it takes more than a year or even years. Therefore I want to challenge the New Year’s Resolution notion.

Another thing about New Year’s Resolutions is that they are usually very vague. You’ll hear people say things like, “This year I am going to loose all this weight”, or “I am not going to overspend this year”.

So practically, how do we deal with this?

It is actually quite simple. Let’s use the the examples I mentioned earlier and pick one habit for each.
And depending on where you are, this will be different for each person.
Losing weight – one habit you can implement is to simply cut sugary drinks to a minimum and drink more water.
Not overspending – you can form a habit where you make a list of what you are going to buy at the store, and ONLY buy that.

You can now take this and apply it to any New Year’s Resolution you had in mind and continue to stretch yourself and grow as a person.
